Etymology: Trefet occurs in a 12th cent. copy of a 10th cent. document (see below), otherwise it is not known till the 15th cent.; it appears to be this word, and to represent Latin triped-em , nominative tripēs three-footed, < tri- three + pēs , ped- foot; compare Old French trepied , tripié , trespieds , trippet n.211.. Rec. Gifts of Adeluuold (963–84) in Birch Cart. Sax. III. 367 vi bidenfate & ii cuflas & þry trogas & lead & trefet & ix winterstellas & i fedelsswin.
