Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Trinidad , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < Trinidad, the name of an island in the Lesser Antilles + -ian suffix. Compare earlier (with different sense) Trinidado n.The European name of the island is a shortening of Spanish isla de la Trinidad , literally ‘island of the Trinity’ (1498; see trinity n.). It is first recorded in English contexts at the end of the 16th cent., in early use also in the forms Trinidada and Trinidado , which are not paralleled in Spanish (compare the discussion at Trinidado n.).
