trollopn.Origin: Of uncertain origin. Etymons: trull n., troll v., an element of uncertain origin. Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < either trull n. (compare forms at that entry) or its likely etymon troll v. + a second element of uncertain identity and origin. With the possible semantic motivation for derivation ultimately from a verb with the sense ‘to stroll, saunter, walk aimlessly’, compare traipse n., which has a similar ranɡe of senses. Compare also earlier trully n. and later trolly n.2The ending may represent an extension of expressive origin; perhaps compare e.g. lollop v., dollop n., collop n.1, ballop n., etc. With the β. forms in -s perhaps compare formations in -s suffix2 (as e.g. mops n.1, mawks n., etc.). For possible evidence of earlier currency compare the following use of trouleppe as the name of a female horse:1542 Will in Sussex Archaeol. Coll. (1850) 3 115 To Wyllm.
