Etymology: < French brocard, akin to medieval Latin brocarda, brocardicorum opus, a name given to the ‘sentences’ of Burchard or Brocard, bishop of Worms in the 11th cent., who compiled twenty books of ‘Regulæ Ecclesiasticæ’.
