Etymology: Of uncertain origin. (Scots also /brɔɡ/, /broɡ/) the Gaelic brog ‘awl’, must, according to Thurneysen, be an adopted word.

1. A pricking or boring instrument: the common name in Scotland of a bradawl; also, an awl.
