Etymology: Old English twentigoða , etc. (see above), < twentig twenty adj. and n. + -oða (see -th suffix2); becoming in Middle English twentiþe , -ythe , from 16th cent. twentieth . Northern Middle English had also twentende , twentiand(e , with the Norse ordinal suffix -andi , -ende ; compare Old Norse tuttugandi , Norwegian tjugande , Swedish tjugonde , Middle Danish tjugende , Danish tyvende . The other West Germanic languages have forms with the superlative suffix -ōst- , as Old Frisian twinti- , twintegosta (West Frisian tweintichste ), Middle Dutch twintechste , Dutch, Middle Low German, Low German twintigste , Old High German zweinzugôsto , (Middle High German zweinzigeste , German zwanzigste ), also modern Icelandic tuttugasti ; a similar form twentiest appears in 14–15th cent. southern English: compare Caxton's thirtiest for thirtieth adj. and n.
