Etymology: apparently a derivative (with -el suffix1) of tūte, not recorded in English but occurring in Middle Dutch and Middle Low German and surviving as Dutch tuit, West Frisian tute, tût, Low German tûte, tüte, etc., spout, lip (of a can), pouting or protruding mouth, etc. (Swedish and Norwegian tut, Danish tud, spout, are from Low German) The equivalent formation tutel, tûtel occurs in West Frisian in transferred senses.
Obsolete. rare.
The mouth with the lips protruded in the act of whispering. (Cf. tutel v.)

Etymology: Middle English tutel (from early 13th cent.), totel (c1400), apparently from the variant stems tūt- (see tutel n.) and tōt- (see toot v.1), the former of which occurs in the same sense in older Flemish tuyten (in de oore, Kilian), Dutch dialect tuiten, West Frisian tûtsje to whisper.
Obsolete.
