Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: tubercule n., -ized suffix.
Etymology: < tubercule n. + -ized suffix, after tuberculization n. Compare French tuberculisé (1811 or earlier).Quot. 1835 is from a review of P. C. A. Louis Recherches anatomico-pathologiques sur la phthisie (1825 ), which uses French tuberculeux tuberculous adj.
Containing tubercles (tubercle n. 2a), spec. those of tuberculosis; affected by tuberculosis; infected with tubercle bacilli. In later use also: resistant to tuberculosis, esp. on a (supposed) racial or genetic basis (now historical).
