单词 turkey-cock
释义

turkey-cockn.

/ˈtəːkɪˌkɒk/
Forms: see Turkey n.1 and cock n.1 and int.; also 1500s–1600s Turkicock, 1500s–1600s Turkicocke, 1500s–1600s Turkecocke.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Turkey n.1, cock n.1
Etymology: < Turkey n.1 + cock n.1Application of the name to the guinea fowl (see sense 2), a bird of African origin, probably reflects early importation of the bird (to western Europe) via territory ruled by Turkey. Transfer of the name to the American bird (see sense 3) arose from its similarity to the African bird. A similar transfer lies behind the adoption of scientific Latin Meleagris as the genus name of the bird of American origin.
1. Of doubtful meaning (? = sense 2 or 3): in quot. 1555 perhaps the Curassow. Obsolete.
