单词 ugandan
释义

Ugandanadj.n.

Brit. /juːˈɡandən/, /jᵿˈɡandən/, U.S. /juˈɡɑndən/, /uˈɡɑndən/, /juˈɡændən/, /uˈɡændən/, East African English /juˈɡandan/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Uganda , -an suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Uganda, a country in central Africa (see note) + -an suffix. The English name of the country reflects Swahili Uganda the name of the kingdom of Buganda (now part of Uganda), (in later use) the name of the country of Uganda ( < u- , class prefix forming e.g. names of countries + -ganda Ganda n.) < Luganda (o)Buganda, the name of the kingdom (with substitution of the cognate class prefix); compare also ( < the same name in Luganda) Swahili Buganda, another name for the kingdom, used to distinguish this from the name of the modern country. The name Uganda is attested in English use from at least 1859, originally denoting the kingdom of Buganda, and subsequently the British Protectorate of Uganda (from 1895) and the independent Republic of Uganda (since 1962; Swahili Jamhuri ya Uganda). Buganda as the name of the kingdom is attested in English use from at least 1880. In Luganda, the name of the modern country (as opposed to the Buganda kingdom) is Yuganda, < the form of the name in English (reflecting the English pronunciation of initial u- as /juː/).
A. adj.
Of, belonging to, or relating to Uganda or its inhabitants. Originally with reference to the East African kingdom of Buganda (cf. Baganda n.); now chiefly designating the Republic of Uganda, a former British protectorate which became an independent nation in 1962.
