A long, tapering tube of ice formed around a plume of very cold, hypersaline seawater, typically descending from a developing ice sheet towards the sea floor. Cf. ice stalactite n. (b) at ice n. Compounds 8.

2011 Frozen Planet 23 Nov. (transcribed from TV programme) New sea ice forming above leaves behind brine that is so extremely salty, it sinks rapidly. As it descends, the sea water around it freezes instantly and forms a sheath of ice—a brinicle—that grows downwards towards the sea floor.
