Etymology: < ultra- prefix 2d + microscope n., or a back-formation < ultramicroscopic adj.
An optical microscope used to detect particles smaller than a wavelength of light by illuminating them at an angle, so that the light scattered by the particles (Tyndall scattering) can be observed against a dark background.
