单词 tynwald
释义

Tynwaldn.

Brit. /ˈtɪnwəld/, U.S. /ˈtɪnwəld/, Manx English /ˈtɪnwl/
Forms: 1600s Tynwold, 1600s–1700s Tinewald, 1600s– Tynwald, 1600s–1900s Tinwald.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Tynwald.
Etymology: < Tynwald (1237 in a Latin context as Tingualla , Tyngualla ), the name of the location in the parish of German where the assembly originally met and the modern ceremony is held < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic þingvǫllr (genitive þingvallar , nominative plural þingvellir )) < the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic þing Thing n.2 + the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic vǫllr field (see wold n.); transmission via Manx is suggested by the change of the initial þ into t. Compare Manx Tinvaal, denoting the assembly and the legislative body.Earlier use of the English word is suggested by quot. a1628 at sense 1, which is apparently an edition of a 15th-cent. manuscript. While the name of the assembly is taken from a place name, that place name itself implies a tradition of earlier assemblies meeting in the same location. Related place names. The early Scandinavian compound is also reflected early in a number of other place names in areas of early Scandinavian settlement in the British Isles, e.g. Tuiguelle, Cheshire (1086, now Thingwall), Thingwala North Riding, Yorkshire (12th cent. or earlier), and (with change of initial probably reflecting a Scottish Gaelic intermediary) Dingwall, Ross-shire (1227).
1. Originally: a public assembly of the House of Keys and the King or (in later use) Lord of Mann's council, called for the consideration of judicial and administrative matters and the promulgation of laws. In later use: an annual open-air ceremony, attended by the Lord of Mann (or, more usually, his or her deputy) and the Manx legislature, at which laws passed during the previous year are promulgated and members of the public can present petitions to the government.Since 1765 the Lord of Mann has been the British monarch.
