Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Brucella.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Brucella (K. F. Meyer & E. B. Shaw 1920, in Jrnl. Infectious Dis. 27 173) < the name of Sir David Bruce (1855–1931), Scottish physician, who identified the bacteria as the cause of Malta fever in 1887 ( Practitioner 39 161) + classical Latin -ella -ella suffix.
Microbiology.
A genus of small, Gram-negative, non-motile coccoid or rod-shaped bacteria which are parasites and pathogens of various species of mammal, esp. cattle and pigs, and can be transmitted from livestock to humans in infected milk or meat or by contact with infected animals; (also brucella) a bacterium of this genus. Cf. brucellosis n.
