Etymology: < the name of Archibald Bruce (1777–1818), U.S. mineralogist + -ite suffix1. In sense 2 after French brucite (1823 or earlier).
Mineralogy.
1. The reddish or yellowish silicate mineral chondrodite. See chondrodite n. Obsolete.

2. A whitish, bluish, or greyish magnesium-containing mineral occurring as prismatic or fibrous crystals or in massive foliated aggregates.Brucite is magnesium hydroxide, Mg(OH)2. Crystal system: trigonal.The fibrous variety of brucite is also called nemalite. Cf. also manganbrucite n.
