Etymology: < French brugnon smooth-skinned variety of peach, nectarine (1669 in the passage translated in quot. 1670, or earlier; 1600 as †brignon) < Old Occitan brinhon (15th cent.; Occitan prunhon ) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *prunea (see prune n.) + Old Occitan -on -oon suffix. The vowel in the first syllable of the Old Occitan form is difficult to account for.

Obsolete.

A nectarine or variety of nectarine, esp. one which has flesh that clings to the stone.
