Etymology: < tyrannosaurus n. + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Tyrannosauridae, family name (H. F. Osborn 1906, in Bull. Amer. Mus. Nat. Hist. 22 283).

Any of various large carnivorous theropod dinosaurs constituting the late Cretaceous family Tyrannosauridae, which had massive hindlimbs and much reduced forelimbs.
