Etymology: < under prep. + way n.1 Compare Dutch onderweg (Middle Dutch onderwege, onderwegen), Middle Low German underwege, underwegen, German †unterweg (Middle High German unterwegen; compare German unterwegs).With quot. 1867 at sense 1a compare discussion at weigh n.2 The one-word spelling has become increasingly common since the mid 20th cent. The two-word spelling continues to be recommended by most usage guides.
1. Nautical. Of a vessel: moving through the water; in motion; not anchored, moored, or aground. In later use also with reference to other modes of transport.
a. As a two-word adverbial phrase, under way. See also under weigh at weigh n.2A distinction is sometimes drawn between a boat which has weighed anchor and embarked on a journey (under weigh) and one which is moving at sea (under way); see, e.g., quot. 1867.
