Etymology: < (i) Middle French brumal belonging to winter, wintry (second half of the 15th cent. or earlier; French brumal ), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin brūmālis belonging to winter, wintry < brūma shortest day, winter, use as noun (short for brūma diēs shortest day) of a contracted form of the superlative of brevis short (see brevi- comb. form) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Italian brumale wintry, foggy (c1350).
