Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Brunsfelsia.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin Brunsfelsia ( C. Plumier Nova Plantarum Americanarum Genera (1703) 12) < the name of Otto Brunsfels (also Brunfels ; 1488–1534), German herbalist + -ia -ia suffix1. In β. forms remodelled after scientific Latin Brunfelsia ( Linnaeus Genera Plantarum (ed. 5) (1754) 87; < the variant spelling Brunfels of the herbalist's name + classical Latin -ia -ia suffix1).
A genus of tropical American shrubs and small trees (family Solanaceae), the members of which have evergreen leathery leaves and large, fragrant, tubular or bell-shaped flowers (typically purple or yellow fading to white); (also brunfelsia) any plant of this genus, esp. one cultivated as an ornamental.Brunfelsias, like many solanaceous plants, contain a variety of toxic alkaloids; some of the species have been used as medicinal or psychoactive agents by inhabitants of their native regions.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) 191.
