Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Brunnera.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Brunnera (C. Steven 1851, in Bull. de la Soc. Impériale des Naturalistes de Moscou 24 602) < the name of Samuel Brunner (1790–1844), Swiss botanist + -a suffix1.
A genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the family Boraginaceae, the members of which have hairy, heart-shaped leaves and panicles of small blue or white flowers, and are native to woodlands of eastern Europe and northwestern Asia; (also brunnera) a plant of this genus, esp. Brunnera macrophylla, which is widely cultivated as a shade-loving garden plant. B. macrophylla is also called Siberian bugloss.
