Etymology: < under- prefix1 + water n.
1. Water lying below the surface of the ground, the ocean, etc.; (occasionally more generally) water at a lower level. Also in plural, esp. in later use. Also figurative. Now somewhat rare. N.E.D. (1921), following Cent. Dict. (1891), included a sense equated to undertow n., apparently on the basis of quot. 1859.
