Etymology: Apparently (assuming that the β. forms are primary) < unknown adj. + -s suffix1, in α. forms with alteration after e.g. against prep., amongst prep., etc. Compare later unbeknownst adj. and forms at that entry.
Chiefly Irish English.
Chiefly in adverbial clauses. Without being known; without the knowledge of; unknown to. Cf. unbeknownst adj.
