Etymology: < union n.2 + jack n.4 Compare slightly earlier Union flag n.
1. Before 1801: the national flag of Great Britain typically flown as the jack (jack n.4) of a ship and formed by combining the white-bordered red cross of St George with the white cross of St Andrew, retaining the blue ground of the flag of St Andrew. After 1801: the national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (since 1927 the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), formed by the addition of the red cross of St Patrick to the flag of Great Britain. Phrases 5b.Union Jack has now replaced Union flag as the usual term to describe the national flag of the United Kingdom.
