Etymology: Probably < un- prefix1 + either -liv (in lives alive: see life n. IV.) or -life (in on life, variant of alive adj.), perhaps with reference to yeast making the dough rise by itself as if alive.
Obsolete. rare.
Of bread: unleavened.
