Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French unitif; Latin unitivus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French unitif uniting, unifying (c1429 in the passage translated in quot. a1500 at sense 2; also c1429 in vie unitive ; 1852 in fibres unitives in the passage translated in quot. 1853 at sense 3), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin unitivus serving to unite or unify (6th cent.) < classical Latin ūnīt- , past participial stem of ūnīre unite v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Catalan unitiu (1498), Spanish unitivo (1424 or earlier), Portuguese unitivo (1635), Italian unitivo (a1342).
