Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin addūcere.
Etymology: < classical Latin addūcere to lead or bring, to introduce < ad- ad- prefix + dūcere to lead (see duct n.). Compare Anglo-Norman aducer to bring forward an argument (15th cent. or earlier). Compare also Anglo-Norman and Middle French aduire to lead, conduct (c1170 in Old French), to instruct, make agree (late 13th cent.), Catalan adur (1343), Spanish aducir (13th cent.), Portuguese aduzir (13th cent.), Italian addurre (a1276).
transitive. To bring forward (a person or thing), esp. in support of a case or an argument; to produce (a witness); to cite as evidence (a fact, an example, etc.).
