Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: un- prefix2, mute n.3, mute v.3
Etymology: Partly < un- prefix2 + mute n.3 (compare sense 5 at that entry), and partly < un- prefix2 + mute v.3 (compare sense 2a at that entry).
1. transitive. Music. To cause (a musical instrument) not to be muted. Also intransitive: (of a musical instrument) to cease to be muted.
