Etymology: < un- prefix1 + redy adj. Compare Middle Dutch onrādich , Middle Low German unrādich foolish, German †unrätig prodigal, wasteful (early 15th cent. as unrætec in sense ‘incapable of giving advice’). Compare later unready adj.2With use as epithet of Æthelred II compare earlier unrede n. 2, redeless adj.
Now chiefly archaic or historical.
Badly advised, lacking counsel; foolish.In later use as the epithet of Æthelred II, king of England (d. 1016); cf. unrede n. 2.Unready is the more usual term.
