Etymology: < un- prefix1 + Old English secgende, present participle of secgansay v.1 + -ly suffix1 Compare later unsaying adj.Compare the more common Old English unasecgendlic , in the same sense ( < un- prefix1 + Old English asecgende , present participle of asecgan (see say v.1) + -ly suffix1). Compare also the slightly differently formed Middle Dutch onseggelijc (Dutch onzeglijk), Middle High German unsegelich, unsagelich (German unsäglich), Swedish osighliker (Swedish osäglig), Old Danish usigheligh (Danish usigelig), all in sense ‘indescribable, inexpressible, ineffable’.
