Etymology: < a- prefix1 + deave v.In Old English a weak verb of Class II; a corresponding Class I weak verb adīefan to deafen, overpower with sound (compare sense 2) is also attested:eOE Prose Dialogue of Solomon & Saturn II (2009) 76 Se gyldena organ he hie ealle oferhleoðrað and ealle ða oðra he adyfeð.
Obsolete.
1. intransitive. To become deaf. Cf. deave v. 1.Only in Old English.
