Etymology: < the names of Johannes N. Brønsted (1879–1947), Danish chemist, and Thomas M. Lowry (1874–1936), English chemist, who independently proposed the concept in 1923 (Brønsted in Recueil Travaux Chimiques Pays-Bas 42 718, Lowry in Chem. & Industry Rev. 1 43). Compare slightly later Brønsted n., Lowry–Brønsted n.
