Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: un- prefix1, English rid , rid v.
Etymology: < un- prefix1 + rid, past participle of rid v. Compare later rid adj.2 Compare Old Icelandic úruddr , Norwegian urudd , urydda , Old Swedish orudder (Swedish orödd , (now usually) oröjd ), Danish uryd . Compare earlier unred adj.2 Eng. Dial. Dict. records the word (in form unrud) as still being in use in Yorkshire in 1905.
Scottish and English regional (northern) in later use. Now rare.
Untidy, disorderly, dirty; (figurative) disordered in mind. Also: (of a boundary) not delineated (see to rid marches at rid v. Phrases 4). Cf. unred adj.2
