Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman and Middle French bruneaux, plural of brunel brown (late 15th cent. or earlier with reference to hair, although earlier currency is implied in the surname Brunel (late 14th cent. or earlier); < brun brown adj. + -el -el suffix2), with metathesis (perhaps influenced by burn v.1).
Obsolete.
A sauce made of butter, pepper, salt, etc. (Halliwell).
