Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ūrania.
Etymology: < classical Latin Ūrania, the muse of astronomy < ancient Greek Οὐρανία , name of one of the muses, literally ‘the Heavenly One’, use as noun of feminine of οὐράνιος heavenly < οὐρανός heaven (see urano- comb. form1) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives. With sense 1 compare French Uranie (from 16th cent. in work titles). The name of the asteroid was suggested by A. De Morgan (see quot. 1855 at sense 2).
1. Used as the title of a book, poem, etc., dealing with celestial or astronomical themes. Obsolete.
