Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French uraniste ; uranism n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 < French uraniste (1702 in the passage translated in quot. 1710) < the name of Uranie (see Urania n.) + -iste -ist suffix. In sense 2 < uran- (in uranism n.) + -ist suffix.
1. A person who advocated the literary merits of the Sonnet à Uranie by V. de Voiture (1597–1648) over those of a sonnet on Job by I. de Benserade (1613–91), in a dispute which divided the French literary world in the mid 17th cent. Now historical and rare.
