Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish unterfirer.
Etymology: < Yiddish unterfirer, unterferer < unterfirn , unterfern ( < Middle High German undervüeren to lead or accompany < under- under- prefix1 + vüeren to lead: see Führer n.) + -er -er suffix1.The forms unterführer, unterfuehrer show remodelling of the second element after German Führer leader (see Führer n.).
In Jewish usage: (at a Jewish wedding) a person who leads or accompanies the bride or groom to the chuppah (chuppah n.). Occasionally also in extended use: a person who performs a similar role at another type of Jewish ceremony.At a wedding this role is often performed by the parents of the bride or groom.
