Etymology: < scientific Latin acidophilus in Bacillus acidophilus (now Lactobacillus acidophilus ), a species of bacterium causing fermentation in milk (E. Moro 1900, in Jahrb. f. Kinderheilkunde 52 49); < acidum (see acid n.) + -philus -phile comb. form. Compare acidophilous adj.
