Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin ūranoscopos; Greek οὐρανοσκόπος.
Etymology: < classical Latin ūranoscopos fish with permanently upturned eyes (Pliny) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek οὐρανοσκόπος < ancient Greek οὐρανο- urano- comb. form1 + -σκόπος (see -scope comb. form). Compare uranoscope n.
Zoology.
Originally: a stargazer fish (family Uranoscopidae), a fish of the genus Uranoscopus. Now chiefly (in form Uranoscopus): the genus itself. Cf. uranoscope n.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 250.
