Etymology: < post-classical Latin Uranus, the name of the father of Saturn (4th cent.) < ancient Greek Οὐρανός , the name of the husband of Gaia (Earth) and father of Cronos (Saturn) < οὐρανός sky, heaven (see urano- comb. form1). The name was given to the planet (in a German context) by J. E. Bode in 1782 ( Berliner astron. Jahrb. f. 1785 (1782) 191).
(The name of) the planet of the solar system seventh in order of average distance from the sun.Uranus was discovered in 1781 by Sir William Herschel, who named it Georgium Sidus (‘the Georgian planet’), after King George III: cf. Georgium Sidus n. The name Uranus was first proposed by J. E. Bode (see note in etymology), in conformity with other planetary names from classical mythology.Uranus is the third largest planet in the solar system in terms of size (the fourth largest in terms of mass), and is a gas giant with at least 27 satellites and a faint ring system. Its orbit lies between those of Saturn and Neptune, and it is only just visible to the naked eye under favourable conditions.
