Etymology: < post-classical Latin Uranus, the name of the father of Saturn (4th cent.) < ancient Greek Οὐρανός , the name of the husband of Gaia (Earth) and father of Cronos (Saturn) < οὐρανός sky, heaven (see urano- comb. form¹). The name was given to the planet (in a German context) by J. E. Bode in 1782 ( Berliner astron. Jahrb. f. 1785 (1782) 191).
