Etymology: In sense 1 probably < Middle French, French usager person who has the right to use something (1576 in the passage translated in quot. 1606 at sense 1, or earlier; early 14th cent. in senses ‘person who has a right of user in certain forests’, ‘person with a knowledge of customs’) < usage usage n. + -er -er suffix2. In sense 2 probably independently < usage n. + -er suffix1.
