Forms: also (erron.) van Allen.
Etymology: < the name of James A. Van Allen (1914–2006), U.S. physicist.
Used attributively to designate each of two regions reported by Van Allen in 1958, partly surrounding the earth at heights of several thousand kilometres and containing intense radiation and many high-energy charged particles trapped by the earth's magnetic field; also applied to similar regions around other planets.
