Etymology: < vaccine n. + -ologist comb. form. Compare later vaccinology n.
Originally: a person who performs or is experienced in or knowledgeable about vaccination, esp. against smallpox. In later use more generally: an expert or specialist in the branch of biomedical science dealing with the study of immunization and the development, production, and use of vaccines. Cf. vaccinology n.
