Etymology: In α. forms < veg- (in vegetable n.) + -olate (in chocolate n.). In β. forms < vege- (in vegetable n.) + -late (in chocolate n.); with the first element compare vegeculture n., vegeburger n., Vegemite n., and also veggie n.1
A suggested term for: chocolate that contains a certain proportion of vegetable fat other than cocoa butter.The suggestion, arising from the idea that chocolate is not an appropriate name if an insufficient proportion of cocoa butter is present in a product, is chiefly associated with the European Community or (later) the European Union.
