单词 vendue
释义

venduen.

Brit. /vɛnˈdjuː/, /ˈvɛndjuː/, U.S. /vɛnˈd(j)u/, /ˈvɛnˌd(j)u/, Caribbean English /ˈvɛnˌd(j)uː/
Forms: 1600s vandu, 1600s (1700s in compounds) vendu, 1600s– vandue, 1700s– vendue, 1800s vaandoo, 1800s vandew, 1800s vandoo, 1800s–1900s vendoo.
Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch vendu.
Etymology: < Dutch vendu, †vendue auction, public sale (1535 or earlier) < French vendue sale (more generally) (13th cent. in Old French; now regional (western)) < vendue , feminine of the past participle of vendre to sell (see vend v.).Forms with a in the first syllable reflect the Dutch pronunciation, which in turn corresponds to the pronunciation of the underlying French word (/vɑ̃dy/).
Chiefly U.S. regional (originally and chiefly north-eastern) and Caribbean.
A public sale; an auction. Frequently in at (a) vendue, by vendue. Now chiefly historical except in the legal formula public vendue. In early use sometimes also in an Indian context (cf. quot. 1793 for vendue master n. at Compounds 2), probably as an independent borrowing from Dutch.
