Etymology: < Latin vacāre to be empty: compare vake adj. So Old French and French vaquer , Spanish vacar , Portuguese vacar , Italian vacare . With the exception of quot. 1543 at sense 1aα. the use of the word is entirely Scottish: compare vacand adj.
