Etymology: < Old French vailant (-and, Anglo-Norman vaylant), vaillant (Anglo-Norman -aunt), present participle of valoir to be of worth < Latin valēre. Compare Italian valente, Portuguese valente, Spanish valiente. The comparative valianter, superlative valiantest were formerly frequent, the latter occurring occasionally in the 16th and 17th centuries in the shortened forms valiaunst, valianst, valienst.
