Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French vespasienne.
Etymology: < French vespasienne carriage serving as a portable toilet (1834; compare quot. 1834), public urinal (1836) < the name of Titus Flavius Vespasianus, Roman Emperor, 69–79, who introduced a tax on the collection of urine (used e.g. in dyeing fabric).Not fully naturalized in English. Compare vespasian n.
