Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French -leptique; Latin -lepticus.
Etymology: < French -leptique (in e.g. epileptique epileptic adj.) and its etymon post-classical Latin -lepticus (in e.g. epilepticus epileptic adj.) < ancient Greek -ληπτικός (in e.g. ἐπιληπτικός epileptic adj.) < -ληπτός (in e.g. νυμϕόληπτος nympholept adj.; < the stem of λαμβάνειν to take (see -labe comb. form) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix.Earliest in the early 17th cent. in borrowings and adaptations of French and Latin words, e.g. epileptic adj., analeptic adj. Entirely independent formations within English are rare, most formations having foreign-language models or etymons.
