单词 ackee
释义

ackeen.

Brit. /ˈaki/, U.S. /ˈæki/, Caribbean English /ˈaki/
Forms: 1700s– akee, 1800s– ackee, 1900s– achee, 2000s– akye (rare).
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Twi. Etymon: Twi akyea.
Etymology: Probably < Twi akyea, akye (also ankye); compare Asante akye, Fante akye. The tree is native to West Africa. It was first introduced to Jamaica by Thomas Clarke in 1778 (compare quot. 1792), and specimens were brought to Britain by William Bligh in 1793 (as reflected in the plant's genus name).
The bright red pear-shaped fruit of the tropical tree Blighia sapida (family Sapindaceae), containing pale flesh which is commonly used in Caribbean cooking. Also: the tree itself, West African in origin, but introduced elsewhere and cultivated for its fruit. Both the seeds of the ackee, and the flesh of the fruit when under- or overripe, are poisonous owing to high levels of the toxin hypoglycin.
